Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist

Providing medicolegal reports to the NT and beyond

Dr Sarah Dorrington is a Northern Territory-based forensic psychiatrist who sees clients in person and by videolink (including to correctional centres) in the NT and interstate. She has expertise in the provision of assessments and reports relating to:

- mental impairment and fitness to plead

- mental health diversion and dismissal of charges

- pre-sentence reports

- high-risk sexual and/or violent offenders

- civil matters including historical sexual abuse.

She can assess clients in any Australian jurisdiction with opinions based on the relevant legilsation, for example, Part IIA of the NT Criminal Code Act (1983), section 77 of the NT Mental Health and Related Servics Act (1998), or the Queensland Mental Health Act (2016).

About

Dr Sarah Dorrington recieved her medical degree from the University of Nottingham, and completed her junior doctor training in the UK. She trained as a psychiatric registrar in Sydney including as an advanced trainee in forensic psychiatry with the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network. She has worked in the NT since 2021.

Dr Dorrington has a special interest in Indigenous and women’s forensic psychiatry. She has experience writing local and supreme court reports as well as civil medicolegal reports. She has experience working across a range of clinical settings in NSW and the NT including: correctional centres, high- and medium-secure forensic units, outpatient forensic psychiatry, liaison forensic psychiatry. She has experience working with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, including substantial experience with Aboriginal patients in the NT.
